GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE 1993 PRIDE GUIDE
Pride March wants floats
Costumes encouraged for those unable to be out-prize awarded for best one
Cleveland's Pride March this year assembles at the corner of Euclid Ave. and East 22nd St. at 10 am, and steps off at 10:30 am. The march route is west on Euclid Ave. to Ontario, and then north to the Northwest Quadrant of Public Square. Marchers can enter the square from any direction. Admission is free. Those who need to avoid steps and use a ramp can enter by Superior and West 2nd St. (behind the bus shelter).
The theme of this year's march is, "We have a life, not a 'lifestyle'." Speakers espousing the march demands will be heard at Public Square, following the March. This is a change from previous years.
The Pride March and Festival will be an "out" experience for those who wish. However, if you feel that it is not the right time for you to come out, the committee encourages you to attend in costume. It is important to show our size and strength. Hopefully we will all someday not need to fear disclosure. A prize will be awarded for the best costume.
There is space for ten floats in the March. Spaces will be assigned on a first call, first
placed basis. A best float prize will also be awarded. The committee would like to know in advance of those organizations and businesses who plan to march as a group, so the positioning can be more organized.
Volunteers needed
A few volunteers are needed for March activities:
Peacekeepers (10-12)-the peacekeepers during the March help with crowd control. An escort of Cleveland police will provide traffic control and security.
Clowns (2-3)-the clowns will be near the entrance of the festival to take donations for Pride, since this year, no admission will be charged. Volunteers are asked to wear clown clothes and make-up to identify themselves and to keep with the festive atmosphere of Pride.
If you would like to register your group or business, sign up for a space for your float, would like to volunteer for the positions listed, or have any questions concerning the March, please contact Tim and Ray Newborn-Hilyard at 228-0683.
